The scariest pricing idea ever. That works.

The site should look a bit better today in Internet Explorer. It still wont be quite as perfect as the standards compliant browsers (Firefox, Chrome, Safari, Opera) but it's an improvement. Please God use one of those browsers if at all possible.
Here's a great article on dealing with a lot of the problems IE causes if you're out there doing web design:
Peace,

Since it doesn’t seem fair to take money from up-and-coming artists who need it most, we’ve decided to stop taking royalties from anyone on Anjuno until they’ve made over $500.
That’s right, if you join Anjuno now and upload your music or books, you get 100% of what people pay for them. You can even set a minimum price of $0.99, and essentially have the same setup as iTunes but with no royalties. And even when you make over $500 our fee is still a low 15%.
We hope this helps a lot of new bands get their feet off the ground.

In our latest set of updates we’ve added the ability for fans to give artists karma points. To give an artist karma, simply navigate to their homepage and click the karma button in the top right of the page. (You must be logged in and have karma to give.) For example, if you go to The Blue Line’s profile http://www.anjuno.com/profile/theblueline you should see the karma button next to the add friend button.
We’ve also reworked the Anjuno Player to be more user friendly (we hope). Having the player embedded in the page (like we used to) meant that if you were listening to a song and navigated to a new page, the song would stop and then restart again. The new configuration automatically pops out the player so that you can wander all around the site without interrupting your tunes. We’d love to get some feedback on what you guys think of the new player setup.

In order to enhance the social network features of Anjuno, fans now have the option of informing an artist when they buy a song or book. This gives artists the ability to say ‘thank you’ to their fans if they feel like it.
In order to protect fans privacy the default payment option is anonymous. If a fan would like to inform an artist when they pay, they can click the “Allow artists to be notified of your username when you pay them” option on their fan homepage.

We’ve just finished revamping the karma earning system. You now earn karma by paying, rating, adding new friends, listening to songs, and leaving comments. Try it out to see how much you earn by doing different things.
Next we’re going to set up a way to give karma to albums, books, and artists you love.

You guys asked and we did it – you can now set a minimum price for your album or book.
You can set the minimum price by editing an existing album/book or when you create a new one. The minimum price can be whatever you want, $0 (hopefully), $.09, $10,000, whatever.
Let us know if you have any problems working with the minimum prices.

Just wanted to let you guys know about some of the upcoming features we’ve got planned for Anjuno in the near future.
Minimum prices. Although we don’t think this will help increase sales, a good number of people are afraid to let their art be free (understandable) so we’re going to add an option for artists to set a minimum price. Hopefully most of them wont.
Notifications for artists when a fan buys. Fans will have the option of notifying an artist when they pay for a book or song so the artist can say thanks. To maintain the fan’s privacy the payment amount won’t be available to the artist, just whether or not they paid.
Enhancing the Karma system. Right now everyone’s karma is based on how much they’ve paid vs. how much they’ve downloaded, and it really means nothing. We’re planning on revamping the system so that fans can give karma to their favorite artists, and implement karma leader boards and the like.
And finally, a few design tweaks hopefully.
That’s it for now, let us know if you have any other suggestions!

"the core talent of the book trade may well combine in new types of ventures – collectives and transparent relationships where writers and editors go into business together on a 50:50 basis and are enabled by web platforms, ebooks and print on demand… disintermediation of a more radical sort."
That's exactly what Anjuno is trying to enable.
Quote comes from an article by Henry Porter.
Just found this interesting article from Jeremy Mercer in Ode Magazine. It explains that economists are finally figuring out that humans aren’t all selfish, immoral, and only out for their own good. There are a series of examples mentioned in the article where people go against what standard economics suggests they should do, including the most recent case where New York firefighters started working for free so that their coworkers wouldn’t have to get laid off. An expert from the article on the Ultimatum Game: In this experiment, Player A is given $10 and Player B is given nothing. Player A must make an offer to Player B; both parties keep the money only if that offer is accepted. According to standard economic theory, the minimum offer of $1 should be made and accepted because it represents a clear financial gain for Player B. But in the thousands of times the experiment has been run, the average accepted offer is $4 and offers of less than $3 are routinely rejected. People, it turned out, were more concerned about equality than financial gain. “Fairness is fairly universal,” says Werner Güth, one of the economists who ran the experiment. This is exactly why making your art free doesn’t mean that people won’t pay for it. People are fair, and if you create something that they love - something that somehow improves their life in some small way - they’ll pay you back for it. The article even notes that “behaving generously provides pleasure.” So why not just charge a fixed price? Love. Peace. Beats. Anjuno
